Korean Air Selects Engine Alliance as A380 Supplier

PARIS — June 14, 2005 — Korean Air announced today that it has selected the GP7200 engine supplied by U.S. based Engine Alliance to power its Airbus 380 aircraft.

Korean Air ordered 23 engines valued at approximately USD300 million. The two companies made the announcement at the Paris Air Show.

“We are pleased with the Engine Alliance’s focus on reliability, maturity and cost of ownership,” said Yang Ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air. “We look forward to introducing GP7200-powered A380s into our fleet.”

The GP7200 engine has a takeoff thrust of approximately 70,000 pounds with capability to more than 80,000 pounds, and was developed by combining the strong features of the existing PW4090 and GE90 engines. The GP7200 engine uses 10 percent less fuel than the current engine used to power the B747-400 and also meets current Stage 3 and proposed level 4 noise level standards with margin.

Korean Air announced that it would purchase five A380s with an option for three more orders in October 2003 as part of its hub to hub strategy to reinforce Incheon International Airport as the logistics hub of Northeast Asia. The deliveries will be made between 2007-2009, and operated initially on high traffic routes between Seoul and the U.S. and Europe.

The new aircraft will enable Korean Air to reach its goal of becoming one of the top ten global airlines in the world by 2010. The A380 will offer enhanced inflight services over what is available on current operating aircraft. More comfortable seats in first and business classes including roomier seats in economy class will allow passengers to upgrade the inflight experience. Other improved service amenities and facilities will be added to entertain passengers during long-haul flights.

The Engine Alliance is a 50/50 joint venture between GE Transportation-Aircraft Engines and Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies company. . The company was formed in August 1996 to develop, manufacture, sell and support a family of modern technology engines for new high capacity, long range aircraft.
